Hey folks, not sure if this is OTT, but if it is I apologize and won't post stuff like this here again.
As some of you know I program in VB6, accessible games. OK they're not fantastic, but they are games. Well Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, have said that they're going to stop supporting it soon. That coupled with Vista not running anything that hasn't been digitally signed has led me to thinking of ditching VB6 in favour of something more up-to-date. This'd have to be affordable, and accessible of course. Any ideas? Have tried VB Express Edition 2005, and my version of JAWS just laughs and says forget it. PHP? *grins* Tried that too, and ... well just call me a vacuum cleaner lol.
Anyway just thought I'd post it here to get people's thoughts on the subject.
Cheers,
Simon
Alas, Don't have an answer or anything to contribute, but this is definitely not off topic.
In fact, I don't know of much that is. <lol>
Bob
What problems were you having with the express eddition? I program with VS.NET2005 and have little problems with it from jaws5 and up. Will help if I can. :)
Awesome! Thanks for that. Quite a few
problems really, although they all boil down to not being able to read the screens. When I place controls on a form I can't seem to find them to move them around, and so have to go into properties to do that. And when I'm typing in the code editor, classes etc, it's very difficult to read lines I've just written, (I have to use the JAWS cursor for that).
I did download the .net JAWS stuff but am thinking that it didn't install properly. What do you reckon?
What version of Jaws are you using? I have tips and stuff around here; I think, and if you want, once I know your version, I'll see what I got and email it to you.
That's really cool of you Cattleya, thanks for that. I'm running JAWS 5. lol Old I know, but it works... mostly grin
I'm still using vb 6, but I'm goign to probably make the jump to vs sooner or later. though I'm in no hurry to.
I don't know if it would help, but my thought would be to switch to tcl and tk. which is open source and is VERY easy to learn and use. it allows you to make text based and graphical applications. You can make a window just from writing some text instead of moving objects on to a form. I program in both vb 2005 and tcl and I love tcl a lot more. go to www.tcl.tk/. if you'd like some examples or need some help learning it, let me know. I also know of a few other languages that may help, so send me a pqn or email. my email is mikedoise@gmail.com. hope this helps.
Hey thanks for that, I did visit the site, but I'm not sure it'll do what I need it to do. I'll stick with VB6 for now I reckon, till I get my issues with .net sorted. Thanks anyway though.
I am also programming with vb6 currently. I can program with vs .net also however, I've not made the switch over entirely yet. I guess I'll have to at some point.
yeah. well if it does what you want it to do ... smile, that's why I'm sticking with it for now.
speaking of programming, i do a bit, nothing to be dangerous even anything not to be lol, but what i was learning in college was not much to say the least, and they were forced to close anyway so what i know of php i basically learned on my own, i use php for linux and a bit of c, thats why i like php, its somewhat like c..sort of kind of but i'd like to find something c-like for windows and no, i don't care to use vb, i've seen code and its beyond me, and java, well i'd rather eat bugs..er um..you know
Just use c++ in windows.
so where would i get a compiler for windows?
go to www.blindprogramming.com, and there you should find a link to DEv C++. that's a pretty good one from what I've seen of it.
How about you quit being such a lazy fuck and google free c++ compiler for windows?
Well, seeing as this is a board for geeks, I am not sure that telling someone to not be lazy and go to google is a good recommendation. I also use C++, and I used the website given above and a compiler given above. It is really much better for writing games. I would move far away from VB 6 because as you illuded to, WinVista doesn't support it.
Yeah, might go with C++, I missed up my installation of dx9 and vb express 2005, so reckon I might well do that. We'll see anyway, I've had no complaints thus far from the site, so reckon there's a bit of time yet. Bit concerned about the learning curve for C++ though.
If you know vb.net, C++ won't be that hard.
